7 Natural Ways to Make Your Holiday Home Smell Amazing

Clean and fresh air in our homes is always important, but especially so during the holidays when we have guests coming and going. And because colder weather often makes it difficult to air-out our home, knowing some non-toxic ways to clean the air is handy. Below are some wonderful and may I say “easy” DIY natural ways to make your holiday home smell amazing! No more worrying about those toxic plug-in fragrances. These DIY scents will scent and freshen up the air in your home without the use of harmful and chemical-laden fragrances – definitely a win-win for you, your family and your holiday guests.

7 Natural Ways to Make Your Holiday Home Smell Amazing

1. Simple Orange and Clove Pomanders

Make natural, smell-good ornaments to hang on your Christmas tree by evenly sticking cloves into the orange. The basic idea is easy and simple. Stud whole cloves into oranges. The more you cover the orange in cloves, the longer it will last. Simple clove studded fruit (like in the photo) should last a few fragrant weeks. You’ll find directions below for making pomanders that last months, even years!

Directions
Use a wooden skewer or thin knitting needle to poke holes in the fruit where you want the cloves to go. You can make patterns or just randomly stud the fruit with holes. Orange and clove pomander ballsInsert a whole clove into each hole. Use sewing pins to attach ribbon to the pomander (just press a pin through the ribbon into the fruit at top and bottom of pomander). Tie a decorative bow at top.

Ingredients for longer lasting pomanders
1/4 cup ground cinnamon
1/4 cup ground cloves
2 tablespoons ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons ground all spice
1/4 cup powdered orris root (this ingredient is optional but will help the pomanders last extra long — find it in well stocked drug stores and herb shops.

Directions for Longer lasting orange pomanders
To make your pomanders last longer, cover your orange(s) in whole cloves, then place in a large bowl and cover with the optional cinnamon/spice mixture. Allow pomanders to “cure” for several weeks before attaching ribbon hangers. These “cured” pomanders will last for months, even years. They make beautiful gifts from your home.

4. Natural Burlap Large Bow

Purchase or make a 17.5 x 12.5 burlap bow. Add cranberries and springs of fresh pine, rosemary or cinnamon sticks for the perfect natural embellishment for your Christmas Decor.

5. Natural Room Scent Jars for your home, DIY Gifts & Centerpieces

7. Therapeutic Aromatherapy Diffuser

Aromatherapy diffusers are becoming more and more popular as a healthy and natural way to deliver pure essential oils. Be forewarned that you will find many different types on the market. Some are truly diffusers, but many are basically just humidifiers. Therapeutic aromatherapy diffusers are heat-free and water-free and diffuse very fine droplets of essential oil into the room. Make sure the one you pick also an automatic timer and no plastic parts. Diffusing essential oils using a therapeutic Aromatherapy Diffuser can help keep the air in your home healthy and smelling absolutely glorious!

Refreshing your home everyday with natural room scents is also healthy and can help keep you and your loved ones calm during the all-too-often stressful holiday season.
